Teen still has chance to set global sailing record

Abby Sunderland still has a chance to set a global sailing record despite having to dock in Cape Town, South Africa for boat repairs.

Sunderland aims to be the youngest person to sail alone around the world.

However, this weekend, her team has decided that she needs to make a stopover in the South African town to have her boat repaired.

Marianne Sunderland, the teenager’s mother, said that it would have been very dangerous for her daughter to pass by the Indian Ocean without the autopilot feature on her 40-foot racing boat named Wild Eyes. Though the decision was hard to make, it was definitely the right one.

The mother reasoned that it would have been irresponsible for her 16-year old daughter to pass by the dangerous waters without the autopilot feature.

Sunderland’s older brother Zac managed to circumnavigate the world alone last year.
