Malta canoeing event concludes successfully

Sliema Seafront

The Malta Canoe Federation concluded its annual Virtu’ Ferries Manoel Island Races last weekend and the large crown turnabout and the big number of entries signified the success of the occasion.

The crowd gathered at the Sliema seafront to witness the competition under the perfect weather. Canoeists from all ages competed in several race categories.

The event started with the 10-kilometer, three-lap race all around Manoel Island. Gerald Degaetano, a veteran canoeing athlete, emerged as the champion of this category, followed by Nicki Borg Constanzi. Settling for third was Peter Borg Costanzi.

The K2 category was dominated by duo Matthew Schembri and Chris Camilleri.
Degaetano won another title at the 3 kilometer event after clocking 15 minutes and 48 seconds.

The medal presentation was a memorable one as winners from all events went up to the stage and proudly displayed their achievements. Tournament organizers thanked major sponsors such as Virtu Ferries and the Malta Triathlon Association for the assistance.
